I recently had the opportunity to engage with the leaders and people of Safarugbo,Gbelebu, Gbelemotein and Okomu communities during a sensitization meeting. This experience reinforced my belief that there are no inherently "bad" or "hostile" communities, only those that require proper information and education. The duration of community engagement to obtain consent can vary significantly, ranging from a few weeks to several months or years. However, it is crucial that stakeholders are well-informed at every stage of the process. One of the highlights of these meetings is the opportunity to communicate with community leaders in our local English dialect, "Pigin English," which is universally understood by both the elderly and younger generations in the Niger Delta region. The Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) process is a well-designed, ongoing initiative that fosters continuous engagement and ensures mutual understanding. At the Edo State Oil Palm Programme Independent Implementation Office (ESOPP IIO) , we are committed to upholding global best practices and have adopted the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) as our code of conduct for oil palm development in the region.By prioritizing community engagement and adherence to international standards, we can ensure a sustainable and responsible approach to oil palm production.

Obaseki Flags Off Ugo-Evboesi Road Construction Project in Orhionmwon... project to be completed before end of tenureNosakhare AgbonigiarhuoyiEdo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, flagged off the construction of the Ugo-Evboesi road project in Orhionmwon local government area, while appreciating residents of Orhionmwon for their support for his administration. He said: "I am here to flag off a very interesting project. I used the word 'interesting', not because we have not built roads in Iyekorhionmwon, but because we are doing something that is very unique today, and I will explain. "This road between Ugo and Evboesi is an extension of the road we are constructing from Benin City. But this section of 4.3km is not being funded by the state. It is being funded from the tax credit of one of the companies that is operating in Iyekorhionmwon. "I say it is interesting because, you can imagine, when we have more companies operating here, we can use their presence to get additional benefits to the community."The Governor added: "The other reason why we are here today is for me to also inspect the contract of the road from Benin to Orhionmwon. I have seen it myself. I have asked some questions, and I want to assure you that this road will be completed before I leave office."Obaseki further intimated residents about the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP) which began in Orhionmwon LGA, disclosing that the second phase of the programme will be in Ovia.He said: "ESOPP has been rated as one of the best agricultural programmes in Africa. At last count, we have almost 20 investors; international, local, big and small, whom we are attracting into the oil palm industry. I am here with some of the investors who we have attracted. They want to see what some early investors like Saro have done in their own farms, as an encouragement for them."Also present at the occasion were: Orhiomwon LGA Chairman, Hon. Newman Ugiagbe; Commissioner for Communication, Hon. Chris Nehikhare; Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Stephen Idehenre; Enogie of Ugo N'Iyeke-Orhionmwon, HRH Edugie Ogieriakhi Ogiugo, Churchill Oboh, Team Lead of ESOPP amongst others.

His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, recently visited some of the newly established plantations under the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP). The exercise aimed to boost investors' confidence and demonstrate, through action, the Edo State Government's continued support for investors throughout their investment journey. Furthermore, the trip aimed to onboard new investors into the ESOPP, allowing them to witness firsthand the achievements of Phase 1 investors over the past three years.A notable aspect of the programme is the collaborative spirit among investors, who, despite being competitors, work together, share knowledge, and learn from each other. On behalf of the Edo State Oil Palm Programme Independent Implementation Office (ESOPP IIO), I wish to reiterate our commitment to supporting our investors and ensuring the continued success of the programme.

Day 1 of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Public Consultation in Accra, Ghana. It’s worthy to acknowledge the great work put in by the stakeholders in the revised copy of the P&C, ISH and Certification Systems. The public consultation is critical for us in the Edo State Oil Palm Programme Independent Implementation Office (ESOPP IIO) as it presents a platform to engage stakeholders on the draft revised RSPO Standards, ensuring that the African (#Nigeria) contexts are taken into account, and as a stakeholder we are involved in reviewing the Standards that will guide our investors to produce palm oil sustainably.#ghana #nigeria #oilpalm #certification #rspo #esopp
